That’s right. What was once arguably the ugliest of the GM Lambda SUV’s is now within splitting distance price wise of the Suburban. The Traverse High Country starts at $52,995. Its going to be a nope from me.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:19 |

Nope from me, too, but I bet I’ll be seeing a lot of these around my neighborhood (at least in GMC Denali trim).
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:19 |

But that’s a top-trim vehicle comparing to a base-trim vehicle?
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:24 |

It was decent value last gen. I can’t see smaller and more expensive working.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:25 |

I get crossovers are hot but who the hell buys these trims?? I can see why someone would spend 20-30 grand on a crossover as opposed to a regular sedan but this is solidly in luxury car money.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:33 |

Not comparing features wise. Just price wise. Its like having a medium pizza come with a 2 liter, but then you see you can get a large for the same price. Why not get the large?
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:34 |
|
Yea for whatever reason its 18 percent more expensive than the outgoing Traverse Premier.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:35 |

People that dont know any better or let themselves get talked into it by slick sales people. We used to call them laydowns. At this price, even though it is top trim, there are so many other options its not even funny.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:36 |

I think the only way this works is if it invades the Acadia Denali’s territory (more features, nicer interior, etc.), but then it just creates a different problem for GM.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:36 |
|
I would be fine with it (sorta) if they hadnt moved to a new platform. But because of that, its smaller, and they are charging more.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:37 |
|
Because I may want the drink. Or the fact the medium comes with more toppings I’d like, whereas the large I would have to pay more in order to get those toppings. If you don’t want to argue features, then why even look at a higher trim model?
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:38 |
|
Are they giving up interior space, too, or is it just packaging making it smaller?
It’s *got* to have more features than the current Premier, or there will be a lot of cash on the hood of these.
At least it’s a little less ugly?
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:41 |
|
Well, remember...the new Acadia is smaller than the new Traverse, so it’s not gonna be invading it’s territory.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:41 |

I completely understand how going upmarket in a budget brand can sometimes be a better value than downmarket in a luxury brand but c’mon. This is Q7 money, I can’t imagine someone who’d buy this that wouldn’t rather have a Q7.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:46 |
|
Whoa! I didn’t realize that. I thought there was some sort of law on the books that GMC and Chevy trucks had to overlap completely. It’s about time they split a *little bit* at least - and that may also explain why they’re adding a trim level on top for the Traverse (so they can trample on Buick’s territory instead of GMC, LOL). :)
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:46 |

People are strange with things like this when it comes to cars. For instance when I used to sell GMC, I talked quite a few people that were on Acadia Denali’s onto base Yukons just by getting them to realize that they didnt actually need most of the stuff they wanted, and they were won over by a bigger vehicle. It makes sense to a point and it surprised me that people would give up things they wanted for more room in a comparable yet bigger vehicle.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:46 |

It is, yes. But, when a fully equipped Suburban runs well into the $70-80k range, it’s not really a bad deal in comparison.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:48 |
|
Yea its less ugly, and the interior is wayy better I’ll give them that. But this gen Traverse/Acadia are smaller than the current ones because of the new platform change so I dont get the reason for the price increase. Could be features though. But at this price, you might as well go ahead and get a Suburban (albeit a base one) or spend the few grand more and get into an Enclave, that way you will have the luxury and more space ( the Enclave is on a longer wheelbase).
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:50 |

So much CP.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:51 |

True. But buyers of the Traverse would be the type of people to factor in repair costs so the Q7 wouldnt be on their radar because of that.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:52 |
|
True. And even then, you might as well get an Escalade or head over to Lincoln. On the flip side of that, I would gladly get a base Suburban over this just for the space. I can do without all the extras.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 15:59 |

If anything, Chevrolet may trample on the Acadia’s territory when this rumored middle model comes out to fill in the gap between the newly shrunken Equinox and the Traverse.
You do have a point with Buick, though, since the new Enclave is staying the same size as the Traverse.
http://www.betweentheaxles.net/2018-chevrolet-traverse-vs-2017-gmc-acadia-13793
Between the Axles has a great comparison of length, wheelbase, and width of the two models, and there’s a clear size difference, while remaining on the same general architecture, the C1XX platform (Acadia being on the SWB version, the Traverse being on the LWB version).

My dad just paid $45k for a loaded ‘17 Traverse a few months ago. He’s such a mark for salesmen. He’s happy though, so ....
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:03 |

Personally, I’ll take the Escalade for the 6.2 V8...or, if I don’t need the space, I’ll take a Tahoe RST.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:06 |

Damn. And I bet they didnt even mention the new model was coming either.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:12 |

No, but I sure as shit did! He won’t listen to me though. He decided he needed a new car so he can take road trips ... then he leased it. Can you hear my eyes rolling? Because that’s how hard they’re rolling right now.
Last month he took his truck in for an oil change, and while he was there he fell for the, “We can get you in a new one for the same payment,” technique. He traded his nearly paid off silver ‘13 Silverado with 25k miles on it, for a silver ‘17 Silverado. Such a mark ...
Neither one of those purchases are his dumbest one either.

They’re the same

Nice Highlander!
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:16 |

Damn, he could have bought two-thirds of a used Type R!
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:21 |

No offense, but your father is what people in the car selling business or have been in the business call a lay down. The type of person you can convince needs a $3000 “protection” package.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:29 |

“We can get you a new one for what you’re paying now*”
* [whispers] For the the next five years after trade in even though you were mere months away from owing zero a month on your perfectly fine 4-year old truck that is effectively the same truck
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:39 |

No offense taken. If you called him a bend over, I’d say that sounds about right. I love my dad, but he’s such a sucker.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:39 |

Yep, exactly.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:54 |

I thought the traverse was a little bigger now. It shares the same platform as the Acadia but the Acadia is smaller than the Traverse now
![]() 07/03/2017 at 16:57 |
|
The Taverse is staying basically the same size, only the Acadia is going down in size.
Traverse and Enclave are on C1 LWB, Acadia and XT5 on C1 SWB
![]() 07/03/2017 at 17:26 |

Wow. If they weren’t so expensive I would buy one.
![]() 07/03/2017 at 17:36 |

Both the Traverse and Acadia are smaller this time around. The Enclave is on the longer wheelbase.

It’s pretty nice in person and packs a ton of technology/features for a pretty affordable price. I like that they styled it to be a little more SUV looking and the driving dynamics aren’t terrible either. The Tahoe and Suburban have been priced out of most families budget, the new Traverse will capitalize on those customers.

Large body-on-frame SUVs are stupid for the majority of what they’re used for. In all areas outside of towing, they are objectively worse than minivans and large 3-row crossovers like the Traverse. If I had a large family I needed to haul around in some kind of 3-row vehicle, I would much rather have a fully loaded ~4600 lb Traverse than a stripper base model ~5800 lb Suburban. But I would actually buy a minivan instead.
The majority of people who buy large body-on-frame SUVs with the old “but I need to TOW THINGS” excuse do not actually tow things. They are the sort of assholes who insist on the passenger and cargo carrying capability of a minivan but refuse to be seen driving a minivan. Because they think minivans make them look like dorks, or something.
Today I saw a GMT900 Suburban with a very detailed stick figure family in the back window and 6SCHMTS vanity tag. Fuck you Schmidt family, you’re not doing a good job of hiding the fact that you are a family of 6, what with your stick figure family and vanity tag. But noooo, the Suburban is the only vehicle that will suffice for your needs.
Don’t be the 6SCHMTS.

I like the new Traverse. It’s an attractive unibody Tahoe. I dig it a lot.
![]() 07/05/2017 at 20:49 |

And doesn’t that make sense? Have the lower tier possible to be optioned-up to just below the starting poverty-spec of the next-tier vehicle?
![]() 07/05/2017 at 20:54 |

Also base-model ‘burbans are SHIT. Unequivable SHIT places to be in. I’ll bet dollars to donuts a specced up Traverse would be the Taj-damn-Mahal compared to a base ‘Burban
![]() 07/05/2017 at 21:11 |

Toe stepping. Theres too much of it now.
![]() 07/05/2017 at 21:12 |

And yes, the base fullzise Suburban/Yukon XL are spartan as hell for what they change. They’ve just gotten better at hiding the fact that its spartan.
![]() 07/05/2017 at 22:17 |

They are MUCH better now though. They can actually compete with the explorer decently now.
![]() 07/09/2017 at 22:01 |

I would choose this over a suburban

Traverse > Transverse engine layout (FWD biased?), hopeless offroad.
Of course that won’t matter to most of the customers, but still it always irked me for a car which is approaching Suburban size.
